Socialite Tara Palmer-Tomkinson was banned from driving yesterday and fined #600 after she was clocked at 110mph on a motorway.

The ''It'' girl and friend of the Prince of Wales was stopped by police on the M3 in Surrey in February this year.

Woking magistrates were told that the 26-year-old - who was the ''face of Honda'' at the time she was stopped - was driving a Honda NFX sports car towards London.

She told police who had tailed her near Thorpe in Surrey: ''I hadn't realised it was that fast.''

Miss Palmer-Tomkinson arrived at court two-and-a-half hours late after appearing on the TV show This Morning.

Mr Graham Oven, prosecuting, told the hearing: ''The Honda was followed by police 100 yards behind for four kilometres.

''The vehicle's speed was checked and during the course of the check the speed varied between 105 to 110mph.''

Miss Saba Naqshbandi, defending, apologised to magistrates for Miss Palmer-Tomkinson's late arrival.

She said: ''This offence is a matter she takes seriously. It is right to say she stopped almost immediately having been signalled by the police. She was polite and co-operative with officers throughout.''

Miss Naqshbandi explained that the car had been loaned to her client by Honda.

She added: ''At that time she was the face of Honda. Along with the surface glamour of such a job comes a great deal of responsibility. She takes that very seriously.''

She told the hearing that Miss Palmer-Tomkinson, a columnist with the Sunday Times, returned the car almost immediately after the offence.

Magistrates were told that Miss Palmer-Tomkinson had been driving for nine years and had one previous conviction for speeding.

Miss Palmer-Tomkinson of Redcliffe Street, West Brompton, south-west London, was banned from driving for 21 days, fined #600, and ordered to pay #30 costs.
