The blaze took hold shortly after 8pm this evening. Police officers arrived first and forced their way into the building to rescue the occupiers.

A police spokesman said no one was injured and that no hazardous materials were involved.

Residents have been taken in at Our Lady Immaculate church across the Ewell Road, and will be allowed to stay the night there after their flats were filled with smoke.

The fire, which saw half the ground floor alight, was contained by about 10.30pm.
