Elmbridge Council will object against plans for a major development on greenbelt land just over Cobham's borders.

Surrey Comet:

The application was submitted by Wisley Property Investments last December and proposes 2,100 homes, a primary school, nursery, medical facility and shops on the Wisley Airfield site.

Councillors voted unanimously to object to the proposals, and criticised Guildford Council for not consulting with its neighbour sooner.

David Tipping, vice-chairman of the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust, said: "As far as the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust is concerned we welcome the sensible and constructive approach made by Elmbridge in voicing their opposition to this ill thought out scheme."

Mike Murray, project manager, said: "It is nonsensical to suggest that our proposals will create traffic issues in Cobham. Our direct connection to the A3 and the proposed traffic restriction at Plough Lane to counter rat running means that residents will naturally access Guildford rather than Cobham.

"Airfield residents would have to pass Effingham Junction, which is about a mile from the airfield and cyclable in six minutes, to get to Cobham, making Effingham Junction the obvious railway station of choice."

The consultation has been extended until March 31. There are more than 500 comments on the application on Guildford Council website.

This issue was discussed a planning sub-committee meeting at Esher Civic Centre on Monday, March 23.

Councillors Timothy Grey and John Butcher spoke at length opposing the proposals.
