Repair works to a Surbiton bridge have been delayed for a second time.

Work on the King Charles Road bridge, also known as the Iron Bridge, was meant to begin last month, and was pushed back to yesterday.

The repairs would have closed the bridge until May.

But this morning Network Rail again delayed the work.

A new deadline is yet to be set - but Kingston Council is now pushing for the work to take place in the summer to minimise disruption.

Councillor Richard Hudson, lead member for capital, projects and contracts, said: "We're extremely disappointed that Network Rail decided at the last minute to delay these works, and for the second time in a few weeks.

"Much time and effort has gone into preparing for and communicating the closures to ensure that residents planned different routes, now we have to start again.

"We will be talking to Network Rail and expressing our displeasure at their last minute changes.

"However, we will be arguing that, having delayed the works again, we would now like them moved into the summer months when traffic is not so heavy along those affected roads."
