A man has been jailed for leaving sexually threatening voicemails for five women, including threats of rape and messages referencing murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

Elliot Mutch, 40, left more than 100 sickening messages on work phones while he was masturbating and high on drugs, Kingston Crown Court heard this afternoon.

He told one woman: “I’m going to make you pregnant and rape our daughter.”

Prosecutor Stephen Apted recounted just some of the messages in horrifying detail.

One of the victims, he said, was so affected by the harassment her husband had to take her to and from work every day.

Two victims received 70 messages between them, out of a total of 101.

The first victim was “so scared by these messages that she was even scared to see the fact that she had a message left on her voicemail”, Mr Apted said.

Mutch, of Dennan Road, Surbiton, left other voicemails throughout November last year, including the following:

  • “I want to rape a boy in front of you.”
  • “I’m going to rape you, you [...] whore. I’m serious. I’m going to rape your mum.”

In still further messages Mutch, a former chef at the Waggon and Horses pub in Surbiton Hill Road, made references to disappeared Madeleine McCann, as well as to “animals in a sexual manner” and “raping a 13-year-old Thai girl”.

One victim told police: “I was in constant worry, even when I was at home, as I live alone. I was always looking out my kitchen window and looking behind me.”

Another said: "I used to dread coming in to work to check my messages. I couldn’t stand to listen to that creepy voice again.

"It caused me trouble sleeping as I couldn’t get rid of the voice in my head.”

Mr Apted added: “He accepted making all of the phone calls and leaving the messages.

"This was because of the drugs he had consumed. He couldn’t remember exactly what he was saying.

"He would not have done this had he not been on the drugs.”

The five women were aged between 24 and 39, police said.

Jailing Mutch for 16 months, Judge Susan Tapping told him: “The content of the messages [was] quite appalling; sexual violence of the most violent kind was threatened and quite graphically described.

“The physical and sexual abuse of children was threatened in quite repulsive terms.

“You sank even lower by mentioning the names of Milly Dowler and Madeleine McCann.

“You caused an immense amount of psychological harm. Why was this? For your own sexual gratification.

“You told your probation report writer that once the sex chat lines had become too expensive you resorted to this behaviour.

“You were watching pornography and masturbating as you left these messages.

“In my judgement, your offending is so serious only an immediate custodial sentence is appropriate.”

Mutch was also jailed for one day, to run concurrently, for possession of a class C drug, the psychoactive trifluoromethylphenylpiperazine, found when police searched his home.

When Mutch was first arrested, on November 28 last year, he admitted everything – and even told police there may have been further victims.

The three victims police had found thereby became five, but officers believe there may be more still.

PC Chris Hindle, of the Surbiton Hill neighbourhood team, said: “I believe there may be other victims in the area who may have received similar messages at their place of work.

“I want the public to know we will always thoroughly investigate such allegations.

“Mutch said he used the Yellow Pages to find numbers that were likely to have women’s voices on the answer machine.

“Whilst under the influence of drugs he would leave vile and threatening messages, but he was too afraid to speak if anybody actually answered the phone.

“He has since expressed regret and remorse for his actions and assisted police throughout the investigation. He said he never intended to carry out any of his threats.”

Defending, Patrick Maggs said Mutch, who arrived at court in a dark suit and with a bag packed, was “mortified” and “ashamed” of what he had done and felt genuine remorse.

Mutch wanted to apologise to the women and could be rehabilitated through a suspended sentence, Mr Maggs said.

Mutch told the probation service: “I loathe myself for it”, Mr Maggs added.
