Councillors are being urged to take action against a Tolworth restaurant that is in breach of planning regulations.

Kingston Council officers said wooden decking and illuminated signs put up by the Sarab restaurant, in Ewell Road, breached planning rules.

An application by the restaurant to retain the decking, which projects 4.3m into the pavement and is 6m wide, was rejected in January after the feature was deemed “over-dominant and incongruous”.

A council report said: “From a design perspective, the use of poor-quality materials, namely the corrugated plastic sheeting that comprises the roof of the structure, has resulted in the creation of a visually intrusive and unsympathetic feature that appears out of character and discordant with the host property and street scene in general.”

The decking should be removed, officers said.

Surbiton councillors will vote on whether to take action against the restaurant at a meeting on Wednesday at Dysart School, from 7.30pm.
