Richmond and Bushy parks are rated the highest quality royal parks, with more than 5.5m visitors a year enjoying their facilities.

A survey by independent researchers Ipsos Mori, commissioned by the Royal Parks, found 74 per cent of visitors to Richmond Park between November 2013 and September 2014 rated it as excellent, while 25 per cent said their experience was good.

A total of 72 per cent of visitors to Bushy Park in the same period agreed the park was excellent and 26 per cent deemed it to be good.

The research, which was carried out over different seasonal periods in London's eight royal parks, found a total of 77.6m pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians enjoyed the 5,000-acres of historic parkland.

In the four monitoring periods, November 2013, February 2014, June 2014 and August to September 2014, 2.3m people used Bushy Park while 5.46m visitors enjoyed Richmond Park.

Linda Lennon, chief executive of the Royal Parks, said: "Understanding how many visitors are coming to our parks and what their priorities are is invaluable information for us as guardians of these unique spaces.

"It allows us to plan effectively, ensure our resources are used in the right way and maintain the balance between users of the parks and the need to sustain the natural and wildlife environment."

Visitors to both parks spent an average of one to three hours on site, while the overall parks average was slightly lower.

Park users surveyed also said they felt safe in both of the borough's royal parks and more than 80 per cent of visitors were from London.
