Today marks the 70th anniversary of the final, and deadliest, bomb attack of World War II in Kingston.

At 2.35pm on January 22, 1945, one of Hitler's dreaded V2 rockets slammed into the junction of Park Road and New Road, killing eight and injuring more than 100 others.

The bomb flew at supersonic speed and therefore arrived before even the sound of its exhaust reached residents' ears.

It levelled 33 houses.

Julia Middleditch was a pupil at Latchmere School at the time, and has a strong memory of another nearby explosion.

She said: "It was break time. I had a pretty little cup I had my milk in with bluebells on it.

"I had just been given my milk and there was this explosion and the windows of the classroom blew in.

"The teacher said, 'Come on, children' and she took us across the playground and down into the air-raid shelters."

Her father, on lookout watch at work, rushed over to the school when he heard but found the children safe and well in the shelter, she added.

A few months earlier, on September 9, 1944 Government censors finally allowed the Surrey Comet to reveal the shocking extent of the destruction caused by Nazi flying bombs.

In just the preceding 80 days, 64,000 homes had been damaged or destroyed and 1,400 civilians injured across Kingston, Surbiton, Malden, Epsom and Ewell, Sutton and Cheam. 120 people died.

The Germans scored direct hits on Surrey County Hall and Kingston Hospital.
