A New Malden primary school has been given a good Ofsted rating for the first time ever.

Inspectors gave King’s Oak Primary School the rating following a two-day visit from October 2 last month.

The school in Dickerage Lane had previously been judged to require improvement on two separate inspections in November 2012 and February 2013.

It was also rated satisfactory in February 2011 – a category that no longer exists.

But following the latest inspection, a report said: “In 2014, a higher number of pupils reached above average standards than in previous years.

“In English and mathematics some reached levels typical of those found in secondary schools.”

Headteacher Cathy Clarke said: “This well-earned judgement is testimony to the commitment of our whole school community and the realisation of our work together over recent years, by our enthusiastic pupils, our supportive parents and carers, our dedicated governors and volunteers and our exceptionally hard-working and talented staff.

“Together we have created a school and educational environment in which children can thrive, believe, be ambitious and succeed. “Achieving Together is our school motto – and achieving together we are.”

Councillor Andrea Craig, lead member for children, youth and adult living, tweeted: “Well done to Cathy Clarke and her team at King’s Oak Primary School in #NewMalden who have just received a Good Ofsted! Fantastic.”

The report added the school was not yet outstanding because its early years provision still required improvement.

This year King’s Oak children appeared in the Surrey Comet for their innovative reading classes where children read stories to a dog to help with their confidence.

The school also recently opened six new classrooms and is expected to open a further six and a new sports hall, as part of its expansion to a three-form entry.
