A 72-year-old is walking 1,300 miles in memory of his late wife.

David Coney, of Oxshott, set himself the challenge earlier this year and is already more than 1,000 miles in.

Mr Coney's Wife, Kari Olafson, died at Princess Alice Hospice in June 2010 and so he decided to raise money while taking on the challenge for the charity.

He uses GPS to track how far he walks every day and is set to finish by the end of the year.

Mr Coney said: "Over the years I have done numerous walks for charity. So last year I decided to keep a log of how much I walked and found that I had covered more than 1,000 miles with a combination of charity walks, national trails in the UK, mountain trekking in Norway and numerous walks in the Surrey countryside.

"This year I decided to better that and set myself the challenging target of 1,300 miles while raising money for Princess Alice Hospice."

Posting his monthly totals on his Just Giving page, contributors are able to see Mr Coney's progress.

Nicki Shaw, chief executive of Princess Alice Hospice, said: "David is an inspiration. At a time in life when most people would be winding down, he's powering forward and raising valuable funds for the hospice."
