Objections are still pouring in against Walton Charity's application to build offices to take up 39 per cent of an area of open space in Walton.

There have been 93 letters of objection detailing why neighbours are unhappy with the proposal to use the Severn Drive land owned by Walton Charity, but was leased to Elmbridge Council until 2012, for a small office block.

Some people felt the charity appeared not to have made the application public in the initial stages - a feeling that resulted in Councillor Christine Elmer resigning from her position on the board.

Jackie Lodge, chief executive of Walton Charity, said: "That was never our intention. We distributed more than 100 leaflets, we distributed to ward councillors who then passed that on.

"We informed allotment holders and put notices in the allotments.

"The journey that we have taken to get here is not for development purposes, it's to help the community."

Not all of the reactions have been negative, and there are now 12 letters of support for the proposal.

Carolyn Smart, of Home Support Elmbridge, said: "Having read many of the objections I and my trustees strongly feel that the benefits to the overall community outweigh the loss of a small part of the open space."

A petition started by Mick Flannigan, of Rydens Road, so far has 355 signatures against the development.

Mr Flannigan said: "There is a common fear that every spare patch of green space will be taken up for building, if the council allows it."

The deadline for comments ends on Friday, September 19.

Suzanne Graham, of Severn Drive, said in an open letter of objection: "The offices and car park will not bring anything to the residential community apart from being a disproportionate structure, creating more traffic on Rydens and the surrounding roads, which already cannot cope with the volume we see at moment.

"Families and elderly people all live in the vicinity and an increase in traffic is accident waiting to happen."
