Plans to increase the opening hours of a new Tesco development have been approved by the council.

At a meeting of the planning sub-committee on Monday, September 1, proposed opening hours of 7am to 11pm seven days a week was voted through.

The vote was carried eight votes to two, despite a total of seven letters from six houses objecting with concerns such as parking, light pollution, delivery hours, highway safety and capacity.

The proposed site in Lyon Road, Walton, will hold nine off-road parking spaces, and a disabled parking space.

Councillor Alan Kopitko, for Walton Ambleside, who recommended the proposal be refused, said: "The reason being that I think it's antisocial in those hours to be extended. The harm is to the residents."

While the committee were reluctant to grant permission and said the original opening hours of 7am to 10pm would be preferable, many pointed out that other convenience stores in the area were open until 11pm.

Late night noise disturbances to the nearby neighbours was dismissed by Councillor Rachael Lake, for Walton North, who said: "Talking to a lot of people in the area, they actually like it being there. So I can quite easily support it."
