New family homes to replace Rising Sun

It is closing time for the hope of having a pub on the Rising Sun site in Surbiton, after an application to build seven properties there was approved last week.

The development will be made up of seven terraced, two-storey houses - one with three bedrooms and six with four bedrooms.

The council received three objections to the development, focusing on the additional noise and traffic, and the loss of a community pub.

Councillors at the Surbiton planning meeting on Thursday, January 18, noted that the developers have agreed to provide money for a community area in between Ferguson Avenue and Burney Avenue, on which the neighbours will be consulted.

But letters of support welcomed the addition of new family housing, which is increasingly rare in Surbiton.

Talking about the development, Graham Cunningham, land and planning director of CALA Homes (South) said: "We are looking forward to commencing with the development on Burney Avenue. We have received a lot of support from local residents who are delighted that we will be bringing much needed family homes into the area, adding to the existing community feel."
