Drivers could be forced to slow down throughout Surbiton town centre if councillors vote in a new 20mph speed limit.

Kingston Council officers have recommended the scheme be waved through at a meeting next Tuesday.

But police opposed a limit in St Marks Hill, Claremont Road and Surbiton Hill road, on the grounds enforcing it would take up too many resources.

Responses in support of the £6,000 scheme outweighed objections by almost three to one, with 13 objections and 34 messages of support.

A report by council officers said: "The introduction of 20mph speed limits remains an important and effective measure for reducing road casualties [and] enhancing safety for walking and cycling.

"It is the council’s policy to introduce 20mph speed limits generally outside schools, in town centres and/or residential areas and where it is considered it will improve road safety, whilst not being detrimental to the overall flow of traffic."

Officers expect the 20mph zones to be self-enforcing, the report said.

  • Councillors will vote on the scheme at a meeting at Dysart School, next Tuesday, September 2 at 7.30pm.
