A pair of "mindless" thugs have been jailed for attacking a woman and two teenage girls at New Malden station.

Prasanth Shanmugarajah, 23, of Clarence Avenue, New Malden, and Mateusz Liberna,19, of Portland Avenue, New Malden, were sentenced to a total of seven years for the attack, which left one victim unconscious.

Their victims got off a train at New Malden on Friday, March 29, last year and walked through the underpass to the opposite platform.

Police said a verbal exchange took place between the woman and one of the men, and both Shanmugarajah and Liberna began kicking her.

The two girls tried to help, but were also attacked.

They and the woman were left with bruising and black eyes.

The victims managed to escape and found help from staff at a nearby bar, police said.

Detective Constable Keef Cook, from the British Transport Police, said: "In addition to their physical injuries, this attack left the young women extremely shaken and upset.

"I would like to thank them for their co-operation and patience, which was instrumental in bringing these men to justice.

"This sentence sends a clear message that this type of mindless violence is absolutely unacceptable."

Shanmugarajah denied charges of common assault, affray and causing actual bodily harm, but was convicted after a trial at Kingston Crown Court.

He was handed a 34-month prison sentence on Friday.

Liberna was spotted on CCTV by police community support officers.

After the pair's arrest last July, he initially denied causing actual bodily harm, but changed his plea before trial.

He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for that and an unrelated offence.
