A learner moped driver has been taken to hospital after crashing into a car.

The accident happened at 2pm today, southbound on Ruxley Lane, in West Ewell, about 200 yards from the junction with Kingston Road, just before Pams Way.

Mike Underwood, 48, who drove past the scene five minutes after the accident, said a moped with ‘L’ plates on it was believed to have been driving in the outside lane of the carriageway when a black hatchback car crossed the central reservation and was in a collision with the bike.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said three people were injured in the crash.

The moped driver, a 19-year-old man, was taken to St George's Hospital, in Tooting, as a priority by road, for injuries to his knee.

A woman and child were treated at the scene.  The woman for a sore back and the child for an injury believed to be a cut caused by glass.

Two ambulances attended the scene and Surrey Police arrived five minutes later.

UPDATE: Ruxley Lane has since reopened.
