A veteran journalist and former Surrey Comet reporter has died, aged 91.

Denis Soul became a Comet reporter after the Second World War, during which he served in the RAF.

He later moved on to become editor of the Richmond, Twickenham and Barnes Herald.

He also worked for the Kilburn Times during the 1980s and, before his retirement in 1990, edited the City of London Recorder.

A committed Christian, Mr Soul took up a post at a missionary radio station in the Seychelles after responding to a job advert.

He worked there voluntarily for two years, preparing and reading news announcements for broadcast to the sub-continent.

He was an elder of Canbury Park Church in Kingston for more than three decades, where he taught, preached and led services.

Fellow former elder David Williams said: "His journalism did spill over into other areas of life.

"For years he edited the church magazine. He helped [the London Emmanuel Choir] with their publicity.

"He was very dependable, whatever he was doing.

"He was somebody who everybody liked, and was warm and generous in his demeanour."

Mr Soul, a former Tiffin schoolboy, lived for years in Tolworth with his wife, Freda, who died in 1981.

He is survived by his son, Geoff, and his second wife, Leslie, who he married in 2001.

A thanksgiving service will be held at Canbury Park Church, in Canbury Park Road, on Friday, August 1 at 1.30pm.
