Star director Sally Cookson is returning to the Rose Theatre next spring with a new production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, writes Fiona Parker.

The associate artist at the Bristol Old Vic will be reuniting with the creative team behind the critically acclaimed Hetty Feather which opens at the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End on August 5.

Cookson will be collaborating again with composer Benji Bower.

Cookson’s productions include Jane Eyre, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, Peter Pan and the Olivier nominated Cinderella.

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is often described as the world’s most enduring love story.

The play sees two teenagers attempt to defy their warring families for the sake of their love.

Robert O’Dowd, chief executive of the Rose, said, “I am thrilled to welcome Sally Cookson back to the Rose.

"She is a glorious collaborator – a joy to have in the building, and an extraordinary director with an incredible visual flair.

"Reunited with the team behind Hetty Feather, I cannot wait to see what they will bring to Romeo and Juliet."

Tickets go on sale today from midday.
