A Richard Challoner School PE teacher, who had the school sports hall named after him, has retired after more than 40 years of teaching, writes Nazia Dewji.

Franco D’Agostino hung up his boots for good on Friday, July 11.

He had retired from his post as head of PE in 2009 after 37 years of inspiring students to take up sport, but remained at the Manor Drive North school working part-time.

Former Richard Challoner student Tony Achenbach said: “He summed up what a great teacher should be and the education system will be a worse place without him – a great teacher and he will always be well respected by all our year and fellow pupils alike.”

Mr D’Agostino was also a former Southborough High School teacher.

Headteacher Tom Cahill said: “Franco was an outstanding teacher, committed to ensuring our students enjoyed their sporting activities and that they excelled in sports where they had strong talents.

“He has left a lasting legacy in the form of a very strong and thriving PE department.

“To celebrate his long and dedicated service, our sports hall was officially opened by Steven Reid in December 2008, and named the D’Agostino Sports Hall.”
