A gang of armed robbers has been jailed for series of raids on mobile phone stores across south London.

The six men pleaded guilty to robbing five Carphone Warehouse stores between October 2012 and January 2013, stealing a total of £61,769 worth of handsets, laptops and accessories.

The robberies took place in Croydon, Balham, Kingston and Streatham.

On different occasions the gang used both machetes and an imitation gun to threaten staff and during one raid kicked a worker from the Croydon branch repeatedly in the chest.

Ringleader Patrick McDermott, 26, from Corrance Road, Brixton was jailed for seven years at Kingston Crown Court on Wednesday, June 18, after admitting two counts of robbery.

His brother Dean McDermott, 30, also from Corrance Road, received nine and a half years for three counts of robbery and using an imitation firearm.

Michael Marlon Smith, 34, of Penge House, Wye Street Battersea. Jailed for four years and eight months for robbery and possession of an imitation firearm.

Paul Barnett, 24, of Clay Avenue, Mitcham. Jailed for four years after admitting robbery.

The robberies at Carphone Warehouse stores were as follows:

October 9, 2012 - Streatham Place, Streatham Hill.

At 6.15pm, Patrick McDermott - his face covered by a scarf - repeatedly banged on the door while the store was closed and staff were undertaking a stock take.

When access into the story was refused, he shoulder barged his way in and claimed he had a weapon.

He grabbed money from the cashier and filled two black bin bags with phones and lap tops before casually walking out. The total value of items stolen was £4,022.

Patrick McDermott entered the store at 5pm and threatened staff with a machete. He stole iPhones worth £8,144 in total and escaped in a black hatchback car.

October 19 2012 - Trafalgar Way, Croydon

At 5.55pm Patrick McDermott, brother Dean and three masked men forced their way into the store.

They threatened a member of staff and made him get mobile phones from the stock room as another member of staff was kicked repeatedly in the chest.

The left the store with £27,364 worth of stolen goods.

December 16, 2012 -Balham High Road, Balham

At 11am Michael Marlon Smith and another man entered the store and Smith engages a member of staff in conversation. The second man produced a silver handgun and held it to a security guard's neck.

They escaped with £19,848 worth of valuables in a car driven by Dean McDermott.

January 28, 2013 - London Road, Kingston

Ferris, Morgan and Roberts entered the store at 11.20am and threatened staff with a chair before stealing £2,391 worth of goods and leaving in a stolen BMW driven by Dean McDermott.
