Staff at a Surbiton pub are hoping a "transformational" refurbishment will prove a hit with customers old and new.

The Prince of Wales in Ewell Road, formally the New Prince, will re-open later today after a three-week revamp - just in time for the first game of the World Cup.

Pub owner Fullers brewery has invested hundreds of thousands of pounds into the project, which has seen the premises undergo a dramatic makeover, as well as a new recruitment drive.

The pub kitchen has also been renovated, with a professional team of chefs serving food all day for the first time.

A grand opening will be held at the pub tonight from 6pm.

Assistant manager Natasha Rosario, who has worked at the pub for almost three years, said: "It's gone extremely well.

"The pub looks fantastic - I can't even begin to describe the change.

"They have done an amazing job and made everything 10 times better. It's transformational.

"We've all tried the food and it is exceptional. It's fresh, seasonal, exciting and not too heavy on the palate or stomach. We have a great kitchen team.

"We now have 10 members of staff and they are all brilliant. I can't fault them. They take direction really well, all have great banter and personalities. It's been a really good selection.

"I've had regulars phoning me up asking when we're re-opening, and I'm really looking forward to welcoming them back."

The pub, which previously attracted an older, predominantly male crowd, is hoping its new image will attract more families during the day.

With that in mind, a family open day will be held this Saturday, featuring games, giant Jenga and skittles in the pub garden.
