A clothes shop owner has been ordered to pay out more than £2,300 after admitting selling unlicensed T-shirts bearing popular brands such as Starbucks, Warner Bros and Jack Daniel's.

Huseyin Doygundag, 37, who owns the Punky Fish women's clothing store in Eden Walk Shopping Centre, Kingston, pleaded guilty to 11 charges of selling counterfeit clothing at Lavender Hill Magistrates' Court last week.

Kingston Council trading standards officers seized almost 300 items during a raid in January 2013, after a previous visit had aroused suspicion.

Councillor David Glasspool, cabinet member for trading standards, said: "Deceiving people into paying for inferior quality by selling counterfeit goods devalues the image of branded items and creates unfair competition for honest businesses in our borough.

"The council works hard to keep Kingston fake-free and to prevent shoppers being ripped off."

Doygundag was fined £600 and ordered to pay £1,708 costs plus a £60 victim surcharge.

Magistrates ordered the counterfeit clothes to be destroyed.

Doygundag said: "We accept the court's decision. The thing is finished now."
