A Surbiton pub has re-opened after a refurbishment under a new name and new management.

The Copper Kettle, in Brighton Road, formerly the Saucy Kettle, is serving once more following a revamp.

New landlord Madeline Bartley, who worked at the pub for 18 years before taking over the management, has promised a more “chilled out” atmosphere at the establishment, to appeal to a more mature crowd.

She said: “It has changed quite a lot.

"All the sports paraphernalia on the walls, that's all gone.

"We’ve sandblasted the walls, brought in leather sofas and put artwork on the walls, all by local artists.

"I want to make it feel more comfortable and brighter."

Previously, the Saucy Kettle had a reputation around town as Surbiton's problem pub - the establishment most likely to attract drink-related trouble.

That was due in part to its late night entry policy and weekend opening hours, which saw the pub close at 2.30am.

But Mrs Bartley has promised to turn the venue's image around - and would be reducing the Copper Kettle's opening times.

"Before hand, you had people coming in at midnight who had already had a lot to drink and it just got messy," she said.

"We'll still be having discos, but last entry will be 11pm and we'll be closing at 1.30am.

"The music will be different too. I want something more chilled out. I want to attract a more mature crowd."

The new landlord said the pub would also be serving food once the kitchen had been refurbished.

And Mrs Bartley is hoping to bring in more people during the day, particularly families.

"I want people to come here and see the difference," she said. "I want them to realise how much things have changed."
