It’s a first – Californian ska-punks Reel Big Fish are set to play the Rose Theatre in what could become a regular feature.

The theatre has been in talks with Banquet Records to bring a new kind of act to play gigs, and their first booking is sure to fill the auditorium.

Reel Big Fish hit the big time in the mid-to-late 90s with major hits and a gold-certified album.

Banquet owner Jon Tolley said: “They played a brilliant show for us a couple of years back and it goes without saying that with over two decades of experience behind them, this band knows how to show us a good time.

“On top of that, this show will take place at the Rose Theatre which is a first for us, but the perfect venue for a band like Reel Big Fish.

“The Rose is an amazing venue in the heart of Kingston which, up until now, hasn't been used for any kind of music that we're interested in.

“This is the first of a few shows we have planned there. With a capacity of 900, this is the premium venue in the area to put big name bands in. As a three-tiered theatre, the viewing areas are perfect.”

Theatre chief executive Robert O’Dowd is fully behind the idea of rock at the Rose – calling the auditorium “a ready-made moshpit”.

The headliners will be supported ably by electronic ska-hip hop-indie rockers The Magnus Puto, who hail from Bristol, and ska-punk four-piece The Jellycats, who have previously played support for the likes of Blink 182 and Bad Manners.

Head to the Rose for a taste of something new this summer.

They've done a fantastic cover of "hungry like the wolf" (Duran Duran)- has a big band feel. Would love to see it live!
