Conservatives win Kingston Council - Liberal Democrat leader Liz Green concedes defeat

Surrey Comet: Lib Dem Kingston Council leader Liz Green concedes defeat to Conservatives Lib Dem Kingston Council leader Liz Green concedes defeat to Conservatives

Lib Dem leader Liz Green has conceded Kingston Council to the Conservatives.

She made her concession to Tory deputy leader David Cunningham after suffering defeats in several wards.

She said: "There are clearly going to be more Conservative councillors than Liberal Democrats. I've just congratulated the deputy leader David Cunningham.

"Obviously we are disappointed that we are no longer in control. We've lost some very good councillors but we have gained some new councillors I am sure will be excellent.

"We will be challenging the Conservatives and making sure how they are going to pay for some of their pledges, how they are going to protect the voluntary sector."

She said a few hundred votes in key seats had gone in the Tories' favour as it had gone to the Lib Dems' favour in the past.

Surrey Comet:

Mr Cunningham said: "It has been a long time coming and obviously all of the results aren't in and there can still be more recounts. But at the moment it looks like we will be the largest part with an overall majority and will be happy to form a Conservative administration.

"We are obviously elated."

Conservative leader Howard Jones, who was not at the count due to illness but arrived at about 8.15am said: "We are so pleased to win for the people of Kingston, for the future of Kingston and young people's aspirations."

It is understood the Conservatives plan to hold a leadership election meeting on Wednesday.

The elephant in the room is of course the mis-deeds of the previous Lib-Dem leader of the council. I fear that the populace of the Borough (at least the few who bothered to vote) may have been expressing their disapproval of a party whose moral compass has frequently been awry.

Care to name the "mis-deeds" or is that just a general "nothing they could do would be acceptable to me" comment?

A real shame to lose the Lib Dems as leaders of our council.
Nick Clegg has had an incredibly difficult job as the junior partner to a party with very different policies and approaches to his own and has not been given the credit he deserves. I hope Lib Dems have not been punished locally due to the image of the party leadership (which the media have manipulated and portrayed highly inaccurately). Without the Lib Dems we would not have benefited from the new tax threshold which means we all keep more of our earning, there would not have been progressive movements such as same sex marriage, putting an end to child detention, and increased support for disadvantaged children.

Google "Derek Osbourne" + "Prison"

This is the man who answered my query about Kingston Coucil ripping off motorists with parking scams, with the words "I'm sure you will agree, we must think about children's safety"

What an irony.

If you're going to get conned out of money in Kingston, the chances are the muggers will be from the council. Hopefully that will change.

Ah, I misread/ skim-read kingstonpaul's comment and thought it related to the Lib Dem's policies and actions. What he was referring to was Derek Osbourne's disgusting criminal activity. Do people really vote for candidates based on what someone who is now in prison did in the past rather on the actual candidate's track record or what their aims are? Really? I suppose so. Maybe they're the ones who won't watch the BBC anymore because of Jimmy Saville.

I moved away from Kingston four years ago after living there for 38 years, about time the Liberals were got rid of, hopefully the borough can now get back to having clean streets and policies that help the people of Kingston and not loony Liberal policies that ruined the borough also lower Council Tax hopefully.

Liz Green is stated as saying "We will be challenging the Conservatives and making sure how they are going to pay for some of their pledges, how they are going to protect the voluntary sector."

What makes you think that is what the people of Kingston want? If they wanted that I'm sure you'd still be in control of the council. It seems to me they basically got sick of Liberal waste and higher taxation.

If I remember correctly wasn't Kingston (under the Liberals) the borough with the highest Council Tax in the country up to now.

One thing is clear looking at the votes cast this election. So far 20,060 Labour votes. As Lib Dems hoped into bed with Tories why would any Labour voter decide on the principle, 'Labour cannot win here so who else do I vote for?', make the decision to stop a Tory being elected by voting Lib Dem! Based purely on these results we might have a Tory MP.

Also the Lib Dem cause wasn't helped by Nick Clegg saying that a large section of this country were "unpatriotic" if they wanted to leave EU. Bye Nick...nice knowing you....go off to Brussels.....oh and I hate Brussels too.

Edward Davey is on his way out come next election. The left wing vote of the borough was a significant element in the LIb Dem's downfall. By joining forces with the Tories, many such as myself broke a lifetimes habit and voted Conservative to get rid of the duplicitous and disgusting LIb dem party. Why disgusting? see below

10 Issues concerning the Liberal Democrats that make them (IMHO) the most disgraceful political party of all time

1. Derek Osbourn- Long time leader of the KOT council who while in office was later found to be a proven ‘ring master’ of a paedophile group . Derek Osbourne is now serving a richly deserved jail sentence after being convicted as a paedophile and is a registered sex offender on the national database.
2. Nick Clegg being humiliated by Nigel Farage in the recent televised debates.
3. The Liberal Democrats betraying their traditional left wing voters by forming the CON-DEM Government with Cameron’s public school chums AKA the Conservative Party.
4. Under a Liberal Democrat Council for goodness knows how long all KOT residents now pay the highest Council Tax in London yet there are next to no public toilets in the Borough and no public parking for Motorcycles in New Malden – Pathetic!
5. Rose Theatre. Funded partially by the Liberal Democrat Council against the wishes of many a council tax payer in Kingston Upon Thames. The fayre served up is bland middle class rubbish deliberately aimed by a seemingly load of geriatric luvvies at alienating 90% of mainstream choice within the Borough. It must be obvious – use the facility for mainstream taste!
6. Cyril Smith – Another Liberal Democrat who appears to have been abusing young children. It seems to me the Liberal Democrat Party is a magnet to sexual deviants and perverts. Watch this space - it appears that portly Cyril may out-do Jimmy Saville?
7. Lord Renard- accused by his fellow female Liberal Democrat party members of abusing his power of office by touching them up on numerous occasions. Unfortunately for him not many takers (apparently - so the aforementioned ladies say)
8. Edward Davey’s hypocrisy proven by him removing from his website evidence of his long term stance against nuclear energy just prior to his recent massive U turn as part of the CON-DEMS. Come the next general election he will in any case be toast and mainly because all the left thinking voters in the borough are going to vote Tory. My view is that it is better to deal with an outright Tory than a Lib Dem traitor AKA our beloved (Not Anymore!) Member of parliament, the right deceitful (in my view) Edward Davey
9. Mike Hancock – Liberal Democrat MP in Portsmouth. I understand from the press he is going to probably face charges of sexually assaulting one of his constituents. Portsmouth Council already have, so I understand, held a damning internal enquiry. I suppose the upside for the Lib Dems is that it could prove to be a misunderstanding as was initially thought with Derek Osbourne
10. Finally there is the inconsequential former leader of the party who was a self confessed drunk. He was so second rate that I can only remember his first name …Charles ????. I suppose the current leader will go down in history as Nick Wotisname? – you know David Cameron’s stooge – you know the one who got ripped up on TV by Nigel Wotisname? Perhaps they were related
