It has been months in the planning, with researchers combing archives for stories of Kingston during World War One – including the Surrey Comet’s.

Biplanes hang from the ceiling while trench coats and tin helmets adorn a replica battlefield, with soldiers’ stories lining the walls.

Kingston Museum’s new exhibition, Remembering Kingston At War, is open until Saturday, August 16, as part of centenary commemorations of the war’s outbreak.

Project leader Lucy Harris said: “The exhibition seeks to add local stories to the larger narrative concerning the war.

“It reminds us that this was a war which involved members of the community who lived and worked in similar ways to us today.”

The free exhibition is based on eight different themes including life on the Home Front, conscientious objectors and underage soldiers.

The story of New Malden nurse Daisy Lavender, featured in the Comet in the run-up to the exhibition’s opening, is just one of many.
