A Kingston man who tried to save a person drowning in the sea has been given a top bravery award.

Samuel Bordiss, 29, of St Albans Road, Kingston, was trying to save Henry Maunder, 21, from Waterlooville when he risked his own life by jumping into the sea near Lulworth Cove in Dorset on October 23 last year.

He was unable to save Mr Maunder but will be given a Royal Humane Society Testimonial for his efforts alongside Earlsfield man David Cook who swam out first.

Dick Wilkinson, secretary at the Royal Humane Society, said: “These two incredible men did everything possible, battling against a deadly current, in an effort to save Mr Maunder.

“They gave it their all, and nearly died themselves before they were forced to take the very difficult decision to let him go. The immense bravery they showed thoroughly merits the making of these awards.”

The men, who were recommended for the award by Dorset Police, will be handed the award in a ceremony at a later date.
