Supporters of a historic Kingston church are being asked to dig deep one last time to help complete a multi-million pound refurbishment programme.

All Saints Church in Market Place is now just £100,000 away from its £3.7m total after receiving a further £446,000 from two long-standing financial backers.

The church has been given an additional £250,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which has already pledged more than £900,000 to the project.

And Viridor Credits Environmental Company, which donated £967,000 to the cause last year, has contributed a further £196,000.

It brings the church’s fundraising project tantalisingly close to completion – and Keith Long, All Saints’ company secretary, is rallying supporters for one final push.

He said: “It’s absolutely fantastic. We are extremely pleased with this development. It’s terrific news for the church and the centre of Kingston.

“This puts us within £100,000 of the total we need to complete the building works.

“We are asking Kingston to dig deep one final time to get us there.”

The church has raised thousands for the refurbishment project itself through a number of initiatives.

The Angels campaign – inspired by the 18 wooden angels in the church roof – encourages donors to become an official cherub or archangel, for a starting donation of £100.

The church is also selling tiles that will cover the new church floor – for £25 a tile you can have your own personal dedication. The first phase was completed in December last year, which saw a new north entrance created, new toilets installed and the vestry completely refurbished.

The second phase will see the Grade I listed church reordered and redecorated, with floors levelled and a new heating and lighting system installed, as well as a refreshment bar.
