A man has been arrested after an armed robbery at Ladbrokes in West Molesey this morning.

Police were called to Walton Road at about 10.30am after a robber entered the bookmakers holding what is believed to be a gun and approached staff demanding money.

Workers at the bookmakers gave the robber money and as he tried to leave the building, quick-thinking members of the public restrained him until officers arrived.

One witness said the robber was “wrestled to floor” by the have-a-go heroes.

Detective Inspector Jake Nuttall said: “This would have been a terrifying ordeal for all those involved, but thankfully due to the quick thinking and bravery of members of the public in the betting shop, the man was prevented from getting away and was quickly arrested.

“We are carrying out enquiries to ascertain whether the firearm is genuine and fortunately no attempt was made to use the weapon and no members of the public were harmed during the incident.

“We understand that other shop owners and businesses in the area maybe concerned when they learn about this incident and I would like to stress that this was an isolated incident which is being thoroughly investigated.

“I would advise anyone concerned about matters of safety and security in their stores to visit the Surrey Police website for information or contact your local safer neighbourhood team, where specialist officers will be able to assist.”

A 45-year-old man from New Malden is currently in police custody while the investigation continues.

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Surrey Police 101, quoting reference 45140025320 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
