Crystal Palace pulled off the shock of the afternoon beating Premier League leaders Chelsea 1-0 at Selhurst Park, thanks to a neatly wrapped gift from John Terry.

The Blues skipper headed into his own goal under pressure from Joe Ledley as Tony Pulis’ side more than matched their lacklustre visitors.

Lacklustre Chelsea may have been, but that should distract from the hosts who battled for every ball down to the last second and maybe the deflating defeat at Newcastle last week inspired them to not leave anything to chance.

Both Bolasie and Jason Puncheon received yellow cards within the first 20 minutes for their over-eagerness and Damien Delaney who could have joined them for a very late shove to Fernando Torres.

Pulis started with the same starting 11 as at St. James’ Park, with Ledley and Puncheon playing free roles on the wings.

The intent from Palace was clear with Bolasie, Puncheon and Adrian Mariappa all causing problems for Jose Mourinho’s side, finding space time and time again.

The first real chance went to Chelsea though after Andre Schurrle slid in at the near post but could not get on the end of a Cesar Azpilicueta cross in the 18th minute.

Puncheon and Mariappa were finding space on the right wing with Chelsea unable to cope with their link up play, and their combination work saw a flash cross land on an unprepared Bolasie boot in the 26th minute after Nemanja Matic failed to cut it out.

Kagisho Dikgacoi was able to stamp his authority on the game as well, constantly providing neat little touches in the transition from defence to attack.

On the half-hour, his side could have had a penalty after Cameron Jerome fed in Bolasie to the Chelsea box and the defending Gary Cahill slid in clumsily, taking the player and the ball with referee Lee Mason turning down the Palace appeals.

The end of the first half saw Palace exert their pressure further with Mariappa again reaching the Chelsea goal line and after they failed to deal with his cut-back, Puncheon could only blaze over from close range.

The Selhurst faithful did not have to wait long after the break for a goal as following great work from Joel Ward on the left was headed into his own net by Terry.

Just 90 seconds later though Chelsea reminded Pulis’ side of their quality as an Eden Hazard shot was tipped around the post by the excellent Julian Speroni.

But it was all Palace in the last 15 minutes.

Jerome hit the post in the 74th minute following great work by Mile Jedinak and a minute later Ledley’s shot flashed past Cech’s goal.

To finish off the game Mourinho had a small confrontation with a ball boy which is sure to make the Sunday newspapers, but the three points were not his, they were for the side from SE25 and thoroughly deserved.

Palace next face Cardiff - and potentially Wilfried Zaha - in a six-pointer in Wales next Saturday.
