The headteacher of Tolworth Girls' School has hit out at UK Power Networks (UKPN) after repeated problems with an electrical substation near the school.

Yesterday afternoon the substation caught fire, with firefighters using school grounds to access the blaze.

Headteacher Siobhan Lowe said: "It is absolutely nothing to do with us. [UKPN] keep telling is it is safe and it keeps going.

"Every time it goes we have to send the kids home."

Two fire crews were called to Fullers Way North yesterday, at about 1.30pm.

A UKPN spokesman said: "We are very sorry to hear about the problems experienced by the school and other customers in the Fullers Way North area of Surbiton.

"We are aware of a previous incident and have been investigating ways to improve the supply to customers in the area.

"In the light of the damage caused by the fault, we have now started work today on replacing the damaged equipment which should help make sure this doesn’t happen again."
