Calls for a new suburb to be built in Chessington to help solve London’s housing crisis should be resisted if they mean sacrificing green belt land, a councillor has said.

The new town would need improved transport links like the proposed Crossrail 2, a report by business group London First said, though development of “enhanced densities” would depend on community backing.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson should review whether green belt land could be used for housing in future, the report said.

Chessington south councillor Patricia Bamford, lead member for better homes, said: “I do recognise the need for more affordable homes.

"The Chessington area will become much more popular should we be able to get Crossrail here.

“I can understand their interest but I would resist any building on the green belt.”

I think bringing new housing to Chessington is what is needed, by bringing housing we will bring more companies to the area and boost the economy for the town. Chessington needs a facelift and this could be it. Bringing crosrail 2 and better transport links to the town will be a welcome addition as well, at the moment we have 2 roads in and 2 roads out. the leatherhead road is awful in the mornings and evenings heading to and away from the m25!! would i be in favour?? yes I would!
