Runners are preparing to race the Surrey half marathon in support of Woking and Sam Beare Hospices.

A team of 30 people signed up for the new event, which will take place on March 9, and collected their personalised running vests last week.

Marc Carey, 42, from Knaphill is running in memory of his mother.

He said: “I want to raise as much money as possible for all the hard work and care that the staff of Woking Hospice gave her and still give on a daily basis to all of their patients.

“She passed away peacefully last year, and my family and I will never forget the kindness they showed to all of us. I haven’t run for many years, but it’s great to be back running and have a challenge to work towards.”

Husband and wife Andy and Krista Lougher from West Byfleet have completed training runs up to 10km.

Mrs Lougher said: “We have to take it in turns to train, as we have two young children, but we always support the hospices, and after taking part in the Santa fun run thought we would move on to a harder challenge.”

The team are looking for volunteers to cheer on runners and man support stations along the 13.1mile route.
