One of Britain’s most revered sculptors, Sir Anthony Caro, looks set to have a street in New Malden named after him.

The artist, who died last year aged 89, was born in the town and lived there until the age of three.

Now developers want to name a new cul-de-sac of 10 houses and 40 flats in his honour.

They have proposed naming the road Olympia Place – a nod to one of Caro’s most famous works.

A block of flats in the street would be also be dubbed Caro Court.

The proposal has received the blessing of Caro’s wife Lady Sheila – but councillor Simon James has proposed switching the names round, to Caro Place and Olympia Court.

The cul-de-sac of 10 houses and 40 flats is being constructed on the site of the former Brycbox television studio, off Cocks Crescent.

The new street will be assigned a name at next week’s New Malden and Coombes committee meeting.
