Up to 15 squatters have left a Chessington warehouse where an all-night rave was held on Saturday night.

Between 400 and 500 people attended the rave, held inside an empty unit on the Cox Lane industrial estate, which could reportedly be heard in Berrylands, Surbiton and New Malden.

Earlier this morning Kingston police arrested a man at the Cox Lane site on suspicion of breaching his bail and possessing drugs.

A Metropolitan spokesman said: "Police have now secured the property and restored it to the owners after squatters left voluntarily."

Security will be beefed up after the incident, he added.

Describing the police reaction to the rave, Ch Insp Gary Taylor said: "During the course of the night Kingston officers liaised with the security from the event to ensure a clear dialogue with the organisers.

"Following a risk assessment we believed it was safer to manage the event in the location rather than have the potential for possible large scale incident whilst trying to close it down.

"With police pressure, a phased closure was implemented starting at 6am, finally closing at 9am. We are not aware of any reports of criminality from this party during the event."

In 2000 after a rave in Tolworth Court Farm, when thousands of travellers descended on the site for three days, police said a lack of resources had not prevented them from dispersing ravers.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said at the time: "We do have powers to go in and disperse people, but it was decided that it might have caused more public order problems.

"If a decision had been made to remove people, appropriate resources would have been made available. The decision was not resource based."
