For years it occupied a place at the riverside and in the hearts of music fans – and now the Kingston Folk Barge is back, for one night only.
The original was towed away, derelict, a long time ago.
But next month Turks Launches’ New Southern Belle will pick up where the Folk Barge left off, hosting an evening of folk music in tribute to New malden-born legend John Martyn.
Martyn, who was briefly a Surbiton resident, died five years ago today (January 29), and a string of folk, jazz, and blues artists will gather on the Thames to play his classic songs alongside their own compositions on Friday, February 28.
Surbiton native and Grey Horse veteran Martha Tilston will join slap guitarist Harry Keyworth, blues artist Tommy Hare, plus other as-yet-unconfirmed guests.
The barge, which has an on-board bar, sets sail from Kingston at 8pm and re-docks at midnight.
All proceeds from the night will go to Creative Youth, the charity behind the International Youth Arts Festival.
