One of Hong Kong’s biggest pop stars will be returning to his alma mater in Kingston next week to receive an honorary degree.

Eason Chan, one of the biggest ‘Cantopop’ singers of his generation, will finally graduate from Kingston University on Friday, January 14 - 19 years after leaving his course.

The singer quit his architecture degree in 1995 and returned to Hong Kong, where he won the New Talent Singing Awards competition.

The contest launched him on the path to superstardom, in a career which has seen him release 46 albums, win countless Asian music awards and be ranked sixth in Forbes’ list of Top 100 Chinese celebrities last year.

Tickets for the concert sold out in 20 minutes, and crashed the venue’s web servers.

He will receive his degree from Kingston University vice-chancellor Professor Julius Weinberg at the graduation ceremony for the faculty of art, design and architecture at the Rose Theatre on Friday, January 24.
