Traffic lights in Kingston failed again this morning forcing pedestrians to dash across the one-way system, writes Faris Al-Jawad.

Walkers had to dodge past moving cars as the lights went off again near Kingston station.

The power had been due to return at 6pm last night, according to Kingston police, who spent yesterday afternoon shepherding traffic.

But UK Power Networks said a power failure could not be the cause and suggested the problem could be with the lights themselves.

Julia from Fast-Stitch Tailors, a dry cleaning business inside the station, said: “In the morning there were no police and people were having to run through the lights.”

Wood Street, Richmond Road, Cromwell Road, and Clarence Street were hit by the failures this morning.

Holly Rachel tweeted this morning: “Traffic lights are out & trying to cross the one way system as a pedestrian is similar to the apocalypse.”

The traffic lights were reported to be back on by midday today.

A spokesman said: "We were only alerted at 11.15am this morning. By the time we got there everything was working.

"If it was a power cut our engineer would have had to fix it."

St Mary’s Primary School in Chessington was also forced to close after lunch for the second day running.

Pupils were also sent home from Tolworth Girls School, although the power has since returned, a spokesman for UK Power Networks said.
