Barcadia has been closed by councillors after a drinker was stabbed in the neck in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

The emergency licensing committee of Kingston Council withdrew the 130 capacity club's licence after hearing from police that the the level of crime at the venue was out of proportion to its limited size.

The bar's licence will be suspended until a full review has been held some time within 28 days but likely to be after the New Year.

It is the second club closed over the festive period after Essence's licence was also withdrawn following a 30 man brawl.

Councillor Andrew Day, who chaired the hearing, said: "We felt there was a decision on the basis of the alleged things that had happened since April and that we felt they didn't make a strong enough case for just imposing conditions."

The hearing this morning had considered written evidence from town centre Chief Inspector Gary Taylor that the bar, opposite superclub Pryzm, had failed to act on conditions imposed in April.

He said: "Despite the modification on 18th April to its premise licence, Barcadia continues to have excessive levels of crime connected to its operation.

"Also of concern is the lack of compliance with the new conditions.

"On the morning of 15th September 2013, I myself observed the venue failing to operate a document reading and checking machine, as required by condition number 40 on the premise licence."

Barcadia's owner and management were also at the hearing.#

It told clubbers on its Facebook page: "Due to unforseen circumstances Barcadia will be closed from tonight until further notice.

"If you have purchased any New Year's Eve tickets please message us so we can arrange a refund. From all of us here we wish everyone a Happy New Years."
