A man has appeared in court charged with the attempted murder of a drinker before an Elvis tribute night at a Chessington pub.

Gino Taffurelli’s suffered severe injuries when his throat was slashed at the Chessington Oak pub in Moor Lane on Friday, September 13.

John Clifford Thorp, 48, from Essex, was dressed in a grey top and leather jacket when he appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

He was not asked to enter a plea but was denied bail and remanded into custody.

He had reported to a south London police station on bail four times before he was charged with attempted murder on December 16.

Magistrates’ were shown photos of Mr Taffurelli who was rushed to hospital for stitches on his throat.

The court heard that Mr Thorp, who claims income support, was the sole carer of his 75-year-old mother whom he lives with.

He will next appear at Kingston Crown Court on January 6.

Stephen Martin Sherwood, 50, from Shepherd's Bush has been charged with maliciously causing grievous bodily harm and threatening a person with a blade in a public place and is due to enter a plea at Kingston Crown Court tomorrow.

No further action will be taken against a 49-year-old man from Wandsworth, who was also arrested at the time of the stabbing.
