Frontrunners of the British 2-Tone scene, The Beat, hit the jackpot at Kingsmeadow on Saturday night.

Fronted by lead singer and original rude boy Ranking Roger, the ska legends treated the crowd to hits like 'Hands Off She's Mine' and 'Too Nice to Talk To'.

Performing alongside his son, Ranking Junior, it was as if no time had passed, with The Beat's music and words feeling as relevant now as they were 35 years ago.

Having seen another ska band, Bad Manners, the previous night in London I wondered if the boys from Birmingham could live up to Buster Bloodvessel's blistering performance.

They did and the energetic Kingston crowd moonstomped into the night, particularly delighted by a cover of 'Rock the Casbah', dedicated to The Clash's Joe Strummer.

An extended version of the classic 'Mirror in the Bathroom' before a finale of 'Jackpot' ensured 2-Tone fans, young and old, left with smiles on their faces.

Ska is still alive in Britain and none more so than at the excellent, intimate Kingsmeadow venue.
