'Stop our road being used as a free car park'

Surrey Comet: Cars in Lower Ham Road, where residents complain they are being blocked in by all day parkers Cars in Lower Ham Road, where residents complain they are being blocked in by all day parkers

Residents have started a petition saying cars parked outside their gated homes are safety hazards.

Albany Park Road and Lower Ham Road are close to Kingston station and the town centre.

A consultation document asking residents whether they want a controlled parking zone has been given out by Kingston Council.

Lower Ham Road resident Sarah Everard said: “There is a very real safety concern.

"Large vans regularly park opposite the Mile Tree, making it nigh on impossible for ambulances or fire engines to negotiate the space should the need ever arise."

But teacher Grant Shalks from Sutton, said he had to park in Albany Park Road due to expensive parking elsewhere, unreliable public transport and no car parking space at work.

He said: “It is a 'give-and-take' that most people engage in daily.”

Marilyn Mason, of Lower Ham Road, said: “In all the time we have lived here no one has ever parked across our driveway, so I don't think we need a yellow line.”

But Albany Park Road resident Penny Stott said: “While not wanting to prevent people enjoying the riverside facilities, the majority of residents feel some sort of controlled parking would stop this beautiful road, incidentally a conservation area, from being used as a free car park."

Parking restrictions were previously considered in the area in 2007 but no action was taken as some residents argued it would make the road look ugly and lead to people driving faster.

Residents have until December 13 to let the council know their thoughts.

The significance of this article is that it's identified probably the only remaining road in Kingston borough that isn't controlled parking.
Come on council, you're missing an opportunity to screw more motorists for more taxes.

This is very dangerous parking - the river is very close and you are unable to pass the cars safely at times but then Kingston Council want to build more homes but does not address the issue of parking. I have a parking permit but can never park down my road because some houses have 2-3 cars and then there is the 1 hour free parking bays that no one seem to check on !

I live on Lower Ham Road and am fed up of people parking across my drive. The road looks like a car park and walking, cycling or driving down it annoys me. You have no right to use my road as your car park. There is a huge car park in the Hawker center, yet people are to lazy to walk the extra 300 meters from it. If you don't have a driveway in your house and want a car move!!! The joke of the man from Sutton who said transport is bad is he having a laugh. It's a 10 minute walk from Kingston Station if that's to far there are loads of side roads in Ham to park for free. He would just need to walk the 1 mile, if he can't do that get another job that pays you more!!! Look forward to the yellow lines coming and you guys getting beautiful parking tickets lovely I can't wait!!!!!!!
