Christmas will come early to Surbiton this year.

Prepare for farm animals in a live Nativity, choir performances, a market, and of course a procession led by Father Christmas.

The town will light up as Father Christmas travels down Victoria Road in his sleigh, and heads for the market stalls in Brighton Road.

Aniela Zaba, from the Community Brain charity, said: “It’s going fantastically. It’s going to be the biggest it’s been for many years.

“It’s great to have entertainment on both sides of Surbiton, to join the place together.”

Alison Persson, from the Surbiton Business Community, said: “You can’t make it happen unless other people want to get involved and put in the hours.

“It’s community and business working together.”

Gary State, joint owner of Hoi Polloi, which will have a market stall, said: “We wanted a two-stage thing. It has been bobbing relatively low-key for the last ten years, but quite good fun.

“With the help of the churches and a bit of money from the council it’s going to be great.

“We haven’t done many things like that before so we’re looking forward to it.”

Paul Pickhaver, from Surbiton Community Church, came up with the idea for the Nativity farm.

He said: “We’re going to have real animals in the centre of Surbiton.

“It’s an opportunity for children and adults, if they want, to dress up and be part of the Nativity.

“I think Surbiton does things really well. It’s got a good reputation for the festival.

“This is to say, ‘Let’s do Christmas really well too.’”

The new light decorations and other attractions will be funded from a pot approved by Surbiton councillors in October.

Take the family along from 3pm on Thursday, November 28.
