The borough will pay tribute to fallen soldiers with military parades and services this weekend.

There will be a two minute silence across all four corners of the borough on Remembrance Sunday.

Poppy wreaths will also be laid down at war memorials in Kingston, Surbiton, New Malden and Chessington before commemorative services begin in each area.

The services will honour British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women who lost their lives in the First World War, Second World War and later conflicts.

Councillor Ken Smith, chairman of the Royal British Legion branch for Malden and Coombe, said: “It is a day when legionaries pay their homage to other legionnaires who have passed away – it is a symbol of support for armed forces, for those who have fallen and their families.

“It is absolutely an important day. New Malden usually has a large turnout.”

Mayor Penny Shelton will attend services in New Malden and Kingston where there will be a parade, while deputy mayor councillor Alan Dean will be at the Surbiton service where he will do a bible reading at Surbiton Hill Methodist Church.

He said: “It is a very sad occasion in many ways but it is an important one for people who have lost people and those that have been left behind. It is an opportunity to remember people who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Earlier this year poppy appeals in both New Malden and Surbiton were under threat as the Royal British Legion were unable to find organisers to front the campaign for poppy collections.

But the Surrey Comet was able to help find two suitable candidates after a series of articles.

Nurse and father Kevin Whincop, from Raynes Park, who was chosen to lead the Surbiton poppy appeal, said: “I am looking forward to the service this weekend – it will be the first one that I have properly taken part in as I will be laying a wreath. I hope there is a good turnout because it is an important day.”

New Malden

The service will be held in High Street outside the war memorial from 9.45am, weather permitting. If there is rain the service could move to New Malden Methodist Church in High Street.

Kingston

A procession will begin at 10.37am from the Guildhall in High Street to the war memorial where wreaths will be laid. The parade will then continue to Union Street before Mayor Penny Shelton salutes outside the Guildhall and the ceremony continues inside the Rose Theatre. The parade may be cancelled if weather conditions are severe although the service will continue inside.

Chessington

A remembrance service will be held at a war memorial in the Royal British Legion building in Church Lane at 10.45am which will move on to the Parish Church of St Mary at 11.15am.

Surbiton

A parade beginning at 10.45am will march from the Surbiton British Legion in Hollyfielld Road to Ewell Road, past the war memorial and then back up Ewell Road where Deputy Mayor Alan Dean will take the salute on the steps of Surbiton Hill Methodist Church.
