Jailed ex-council leader Derek Osbourne has apologised to the people of Kingston following his imprisonment for possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

The disgraced former Liberal Democrat leader was sentenced to two years in prison today.

He had  earlier admitted to making, possessing and distributing thousands of images depicting children, animals and women being subjected to sexual abuse and violence.

In a statement released this afternoon through his legal team, Osbourne said: "I have fully admitted my guilt in this case from the moment police came to my home and I have fully co-operated with the authorities since my arrest.

"I would like to thank my solicitor Phil Smith.

"I apologise to everyone for my wrongdoing, particularly the children involved. "I am now receiving the treatment which I need.

"I apologise to the residents of Kingston, my colleagues, friends and especially to my family for letting them down so badly."
