Music journalist-turned-rock frontman David Sinclair has a “branding issue”.
His band, the David Sinclair Trio, is now a four-piece.
But as luck would have it, the group’s new guitarist, Geoff Peel, lives within spitting distance of the Ram Jam Club, where the “DS3 + 1” will be playing on Sunday, September 22.
“I’m delighted Geoff’s come along,” says Sinclair, a music critic for The Times. “He joined us in May this year. He played a few songs at my 60th birthday gig.
“He’s such a cool guy and we said: ‘you’d better do this again.’. He’s done every gig since then.”
Formed on New Year’s Eve 2004, the David Sinclair Trio plays, in Sinclair’s own words, “London rock and roll”.
The group have gone through several line-up changes over the years, mainly with drummers – although recently the band has alternated between Sinclair’s own son Jack and sticksman Brent Keefe.
The two mainstays throughout have been Sinclair and bassist George Andrew – although with Andrew about to emigrate to Los Angeles, the band will once again be going through a period of change.
“He’s been the pillar of strength that the band has been maintained on, but yeah, we’re going to need a new bassist,” says Sinclair, with a sigh.

But for now, Sinclair’s four-piece “trio” will be supporting the Johnny Dowd Band, who are on tour from the US supporting their new album Do The Gargon.
“Johnny used to drive a furniture van, then decided to get into rock n roll,” says Sinclair. “The last time we played a show with him was at Dingwalls. He’s a really good guy, he’s got this murky, quite gothic sound.
“People say I look a lot like him. I think we’re going to do a double act in Kingston.”
Sinclair said he was looking forward to returning to the Ram Jam, a venue he’s played on several occasions.
“I’ve been there a few times,” says Sinclair. “It’s a nice venue and we always have a good time.”
