The crowning past of Kingston's first King in All Saint's Church will be featured on television tonight, writes Alice Sharman.
The third and final episode of BBC4’s King Alfred and the Anglo-Saxons will cover King Athelstan, Alfred the Great’s grandson, who was crowned in the church.
Athelstan reigned between 925AD and 939AD, before dying in his mid-forties.
Known as ‘Athelstan the Glorious’, he took York from the Danes and defeated an invasion by the King of Scotland, in alliance with the Welsh and the Danes.
After this he became the first King of all of England, he is known for never having lost a battle.
The church, in Market Place, is in the middle of a redevelopment project as the main part of the building is refurbished and is still looking for help to complete the final stages of work.
The new North Porch is currently being built and the floor being repaired for replacement.
