Friends, family, former school friends and Royal Marines gathered to say goodbye to Lieutenant Damien Moran at his funeral in Kingston today.

The former Tiffin schoolboy, 23, died in Egypt on August 3 while snorkelling in a shallow reef.

Lt Moran, known as Day, received a funeral with full military honours, at St Peter’s Church in London Road this lunchtime.

The church was full with mourners, as his coffin, draped in the Union Jack, was carried by colleagues from Bravo Company 40 Commando Royal Marines.

Company Padre, Reverend Paul Andrew, said: “Day was, is, an exceptional young man.

“Seeing so many people here today is a reflection of what an amazing person he was.

“If you knew him, you were indeed fortunate.”

Friend Chris Carroll read a tribute from Lt Moran’s girlfriend Fiona, saying: “I loved him unconditionally.

“In all I do, I will think of him and these thoughts will carry me through."

His father Brian said the family were still in shock, but added: “We are very fortunate to have many treasured memories of Day that will never be forgotten.”

Kelvin Wong, a friend from Tiffin School, joked about Lieut Moran’s love of KFC, and revealed his nickname in the school rowing team was “pocket battleship – small, but with big guns."

He added: “It’s easy not to notice the effect your friends have on you when they’re around.

"It’s only when they’re gone you realise what they have taught and shown you.

“Day, it’s been an honour to be able to call you my friend. But today I say farewell.

"Rest in peace, Day."

Lt. Moran’s coffin was then carried out to The Gael, from movie The Last of the Mohicans, before being taken to Kingston Crematorium for a private family committal.
