Merton Council will bid to buy scrubland up for auction in the hope of transforming it into land for the community.
The 0.53 acre site at the end of Rookwood Avenue in New Malden is owned by the Royal Borough of Kingston but has been listed for sale by Barnard Marcus with a starting price of £20,000 at auction.
An agreement to bid for the land was agreed after a motion was put forward by conservative councillor Gilli-Lewis Lavender for West Barnes at a full council meeting on July 10.
She said: "Obviously I am pleased that the council has supported my request to put in a bid for the land at Rookwood Avenue.
"Should the land be purchased it will give the residents of Rookwood Avenue an opportunity to shape how this amenity space could be used for the benefit of our local community, which is long overdue after all the disruption caused to residents by the B&Q development. "I will do everything that I can to push the council’s leadership to purchase this land right up to the point of auction."
