Tolworth Broadway split over greenway plans

Work begins on Monday but Tolworth Broadway traders and residents are still split Work begins on Monday but Tolworth Broadway traders and residents are still split

The votes are in: Tolworth Greenway has split the community right down the middle, as building for the multimillion pound project goes ahead.

A straw poll of 50 people, days before work begins, revealed half of the residents and traders asked opposed the scheme, concerned about danger and disruption. The other half were hopeful it would help businesses.

Kerri Chadwick, 42, from Chadwick and Co Hair and Beauty, said: “Anything to update the Broadway would be good, especially for the businesses, and to make it brighter and bring in more people.”

Saif Shariefi, 32, an IT consultant from PC Rescue Squad, said: “We are definitely worried about it. We will have six months of disruption and traffic chaos.

“I am going to meet the contractors and see what will happen, because 24 weeks is too much.”

Twickenham resident Geraint Williams, 40, who works in Tolworth, said it would improve the grim views of the road.

Karin Reed, 50, from Northcote Avenue, said: “How are they going to make the traffic flow? I am not convinced that people would really feel secure in the middle of the road.”

Preparatory work will begin on Monday, with building work due to start on March 18.

What a ridiculous waste of money - it will take more than a few bits of green tarmac to bring people back to Tolworth Broadway - reducing traffic to single lane is hardly going to increase trade, more to the point people will avoid the area because of traffic congestion. The Broadway is dull, we couldn't even be bothered to put up Christmas lights. I suppose the middle part will be full of beer cans and vomit, like the subways which serve it before too long!

Most people are against this. Of the ones who say they do support it the comment you report is typical: "Anything to update the Broadway would be good".

Tolworth hasn't received the money that other parts of the borough have over the years, so some think this is better than nothing. In reality local residents do want improvements, but not this green monstrosity.

A few years ago, Tolworth broadway had just one gentlemen's barbers - now it has seven or eight. Why?

Is something in the water making our hair grow more quickly?

A few years ago they did a similar update to New Malden High Street and it has been a complete disaster, you cannot get through the High Street without being stuck behind a bus Parking is impossible and the work was so badly done it had to be dug up at least 5 times to my knowledge. Improvement it was not!

Funny, I have noticed the same about Surbiton. The number seems to have at least doubled in the last 5 years.

The good thing is that the competition has really kept the price down. Most of the barbers are still under £10 for a standard cut which I think is about right, but is a good £5 cheaper than in a lot other other (less affluent) towns.

A complete waste of money , the broadway works as it is .. to spend that kind of money in this age of austerity is criminal . The knock on effects and traffic congestion it will cause on one of the main routes in and out of Kingston will have consequences for everyone .

I own the Broadway Bar Cafe on Tolworth Broadway I have lived in Tolworth for 34 years. I think this is the greatest news for businesses on the Broadway as people living in Sunray Estate can come to do their shopping safely even on dark evenings without being intimidated by yobs loitering in underpasses or being run over by cars if you try to cross over by the round about. Tolworth Broadway would be brighter safer place with more variety of shops, it will take time but Tolworth broadway will look better and smarter after the work is done. All the people with negative comments will have to eat their words
